Vintage Travel Posters on Metal

This is the largest room in the archive, and the one closest to where the whole idea started. It runs from the stone-lithograph era of the PLM and the great French railways, through the art deco liners of the thirties, to the mid-century airline work of Pan Am, TWA, BOAC and Panagra — the years when an airline sold you a country rather than a seat. There are ski maps from Garmisch, Clipper routes to Bermuda and Calcutta, Queensland reef posters, Swiss funiculars and Japanese railway woodblocks. Printed on steel, they hold their colour the way the originals were meant to: flat, saturated and unapologetic. A vintage travel poster is the safest gift in this catalogue — almost everyone has a place they would rather be. Filed as travel wall art, but a retro travel print mostly works as an argument for going somewhere.
